Finally summer! I had fun last weekend with my sister, my nieces and nephew kayaking and swimming at their lake cottage in Maine. It felt great to re-connect with them. Get Engaged For More Profit

After conducting over 50 benefit auctions over last few months, I have learned a top predictor of profit in this economy. It might surprise you: Audience Cultivation.

Non profits that obsessed on personally inviting and engaging auction guests increased their auction profit while groups that fixated on décor, dancing, and dessert had disappointing outcomes.

Friend-Raising is a peak factor for auction success in this erratic economy. Approach your benefit auction as both a cultivation and fundraising event and you will ensure that your auction will be a catalyst for future giving.

By deepening relationships with auction supporters, you invite investment and involvement far beyond auction night.

Consider these 3 key points to maximize your auction revenue:

  • Focus on Audience Development - Now is an excellent time to talk with your board, major donors, sponsors, vendors and community leaders. Engage your auction committee and staff to work with you. Take the time now to talk personally with each of them about your organization's success and challenges. Ask for their continued support.

  • Leverage every network - Draw on everyone's personal and business contacts to create an expansive list of prospects that reach beyond your direct constituency. Ask: Who has the buying power now? Who are the influence leaders? Who are their colleagues? Expand your next circle of influence.

  • Go beyond just mailing invitations - Engage your Board, Auction Committee, Sponsors and Awardees to personally select and follow up with top supporters and prospects. The goal is to build long term relationships to engage them year round before, during and after your auction. Increase participation at many levels of giving.

Here's a super way to boost auction items. While you're vacationing and visiting this summer, request an auction contribution from all the businesses, travel sites, restaurants and shops. It's easier to solicit auction items personally face to face with the business owner or manager when you have just spent money there.

Remember; keep item solicitation forms handy wherever you go!
